Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) came up with some power-packed batting to defeat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 43 runs in a high-scoring Indian Premier League (IPL) clash here on Sunday. This was the second consecutive victory for RCB, who have now risen to the top of the IPL 2026 points table while former champions CSK sustained their third back-to-back defeat to remain rock bottom. Batting first in their allotted 20 overs, RCB set a colossal target of 251 runs for CSK. In response, CSK were bowled out for 207 runs.

What happned during the match?

In the match, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to bowl first, but Kohli and Co. proved his decision wrong. For RCB, Tim David scored 70 runs off just 25 balls. During this blistering knock, he rained down sixes. David smashed 8 sixes and three fours in this innings. Captain Rajat Patidar played a blistering innings, scoring 48 runs off 19 balls. During his innings, he hit only one four while smashing 6 sixes. Earlier, Phil Salt scored 46 runs off 30 balls, aided by three fours and two sixes. Devdutt Padikkal completed his half-century—scoring 50 runs off 29 balls—after Kohli's dismissal. He hit five fours and two sixes. Before getting out, Kohli had scored 28 runs off 18 balls, hitting two fours and a six.

For CSK, almost all the bowlers proved to be expensive. Jamie Overton, Shivam Dube, and Anshul Kamboj claimed one wicket each. All the other bowlers proved to be quite expensive and failed to secure any wickets. Whether CSK's batsmen would be able to chase down this mountainous total remained a major question.

Chasing the massive target of 251 runs, CSK got off to a very poor start. The team lost three wickets within the first 30 runs. Sanju Samson departed after scoring 9 runs, Ruturaj Gaikwad for 7, and Ayush Mhatre for just 1 run. However, subsequently, Sarfaraz Khan and Kartik Sharma attempted to stabilize the innings. Khan played a blistering half-century knock off just 24 balls. However, Krunal Pandya subsequently sent half the team back to the pavilion by dismissing both Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer in a single over. Jamie Overton kept CSK's hopes alive to some extent, aided by Prashant Veer; the two batsmen scored 37 runs off 16 balls and 43 runs off 29 balls, respectively. Shivam Dube could only manage 18 runs off 13 balls. Noor Ahmad, Matt Henry, and Anshul Kamboj also failed to make a significant impact, and the entire team was bundled out for a total of 207 runs in 19.4 overs.

For RCB, Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed 3 wickets for 41 runs in his 4 overs. Jacob Duffy, Abhinandan Singh, and Krunal Pandya took 2 wickets each, while Suyash Sharma secured one wicket. Romario Shepherd bowled a single over but went wicketless.

How are the teams placed?

This marks CSK's third consecutive defeat in the tournament, while RCB have registered their second victory. On March 30, CSK was soundly defeated by the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. Subsequently, on April 3, the Punjab Kings also chased down a target of over 200 runs against CSK with relative ease. And now, in today's match, RCB has crushed them by a massive margin of 43 runs. The team's next fixture is against the Delhi Capitals on April 11 in Chennai.
